Course Description
Through sponsorship from the Coleg Cymraeg Cenedlaethol, this national advanced scheme is led and taught, mainly, by Aberystwyth University. The plan also includes a collaborative element, with the University of Wales Trinity Saint David providing and teaching the simultaneous translation and optional subtitling modules.
This scheme is suitable for anyone who wishes to develop a career in the field of professional translation. It is a very flexible scheme and you can choose one of three routes: Certificate (60 credits), Diploma (120 credits) or MA (180 credits).
The scheme combines specialist modules with workplace opportunities alongside professional translators in the translation sector. You will have the opportunity to study translation theories and techniques, translation technology and resources, as well as the role of the translator in the workplace. The course focuses on developing translation skills of the highest grade, and a strong emphasis is placed on practical sessions, and on workshops.
You will be introduced to all aspects of translation and the areas of study include general translation, legislative and specialist translation; translation technology; international creative translation; as well as simultaneous translation, provided by the University of Wales Trinity Saint David. You can also choose to complete a research project.
The Professional Translation Studies MA will give you the opportunity to develop the necessary skills for developing a successful career in the field of written translation and interpreting. As language experts, this qualification will give you a very solid foundation to be able to confidently join the translation industry in Wales, helping you to get fully involved in those wider aspects of translation as well, such as subtitling.
You will also be a strong candidate for any job that requires editing and proofreading skills, and as a result of your solid language skills, you will be a great asset to the bilingual workforce in Wales.
Entry Requirements / Admissions
Entry requirements include a first degree in a relevant subject and completion of a language test in order to ensure fluency in written English and Welsh.
