Course Description

In choosing to study Computer Science and Physics at Aberystwyth University, you will be immersed in the fundamentals of computer science and the very latest scientific developments and technological innovations. With a thorough grounding in the core principles of each scientific discipline, the structure of the Computer Science and Physics Degree allows you to develop the skills needed to solve complex problems that include analysis, design, solution choice and implementation.

You will develop the skills and capabilities sought by the main employers in these disciplines, and on completion of your Computer Science and Physics Degree, you will graduate with the competencies necessary to undertake the career you choose.

The combination of studying Computer Science and Physics is a very engaging and diverse subject with emphasis on a wide range of subjects and career planning. You will receive a thorough grounding in software development, programming, communications and telematics, classical dynamics, algebra and calculus and modern and laboratory physics. The numerical and computational skills which you will gain are easily transferable between the two disciplines of physics and computer science.

Your time will be shared between gaining hands-on laboratory experience using equipment including lasers, oscilloscopes and spectrometers, and lectures that will inspire and interest you. This degree is accredited by the BCS (the Chartered Institute for IT) on behalf of the Engineering Council, which gives you a head start when you enter the competitive job market.

Students will be able to use our facilities and equipment that contain Linux, Mac OS X laboratories and central servers. You will be taught by lecturers who have close links with the industry and software engineering conferences.

Our researchers in the Physics Department are currently involved with the ExoMars Project 2020, which is run by the European Space Agency. Students on this course will have access to robotic equipment including Ardvinos, mobile robots and sailing robots.

Employability skills are the core values of our degree. As part of your degree, you will be required to take part in a residential where you and other students will have work in teams to solve problems. This activity will encourage and improve your skills in communication, analysis, time management, teamwork, organisational skills, implementation skills, independent work and research skills.

This degree scheme will prepare you for a variety of career paths which include:
