Course Description

The Welsh language and Geography subjects at Aberystwyth University are the most prominent and experienced of their kind. The Department of Geography and Earth Sciences is located on the coast of Ceredigion Bay and is surrounded by a wide variety of beautiful landscapes, including the sea, moors, mountains and grasslands; it is in a unique place to make the most of the wonderful landscapes that surround it, and offers you a special variety of field work and leisure opportunities.

It is home to an enthusiastic community of students and researchers who share the aim of promoting a wider understanding of the Welsh language, its history, its literature and its place in the contemporary and international world. First Language and Second Language – this degree scheme includes Second Language and First Language pathways. As we are a large and dynamic Geography community, we can offer you a very wide range of geographic expertise, opportunities and facilities: River catchment processes; Glaciology; Biogeography; Quaternary Environmental Change; Current trends in Earthquakes; Urban Sustainability; Regional Development; Political and Cultural Geography; Fieldwork opportunities in New Zealand, Crete, New York, France, Ireland, Iceland, Mount Etna, Ecuador and Peru, among others; Travel awards available each year to fund your adventures (up to £400); First class teaching facilities and the latest technology to enrich learning; Fully equipped laboratories including a variety of analytical instruments e.g. spectrometers and core scanners that can be used for fieldwork and independent study. Employability is an integral part of all the courses we offer. Our degrees offer a solid foundation for a wide variety of careers across a range of sectors.
