The establishment of the Welsh Parliament and the later addition of more powers along with the Welsh Language Act was a trigger for the need for high quality graduates - individuals who are qualified to join a professional workforce, and to work confidently through the Welsh and English. Because of that, it is an extremely exciting time to study Welsh at university. When choosing to study the Professional Welsh BA course, you will be joining an innovative Welsh course which focuses on practical and vocational skills suitable for the professional workplace in contemporary Wales and beyond. Today, employers, as well as prospective students and parents, are looking for a 'gold standard' degree in Welsh. This is that degree.

Here is a summary of what you may study during the three-year degree scheme.

Year 1

In the first year you will study the Introduction to Professional Welsh module. As the name suggests, this module provides an introduction to the field. You will learn a range of skills such as simultaneous translation, administrative skills, public speaking, editing and marketing. You will have the opportunity to work as a team and to develop your marketing skills when organizing the Literature and Song Night. You will be allowed to act on the editorial board of Y Ddraig, the Department's literary magazine. You and the other students will commission and edit the work.

Year 2 and 3

In the second and third year you will follow four Professional Welsh modules:

Welsh in the Workplace - This is a work experience module; Conversion and Adaptation - Translation module; Bro a Bywyd - discussing tourism and literary heritage; Long Project - an opportunity to work on an original research project in the field of Professional Welsh. You can also choose from a wide variety of other modules in the Department.

How will I be taught?

Through a combination of traditional lectures, seminars and other innovative learning methods. The groups are smaller and the atmosphere more informal in the seminars, in order to foster a more open discussion.

How will I be assessed?

The students' work is assessed through examinations, through regular assessment, and through setting and marking of essays and exercises.
