Course Description

By choosing to study this BA History and Welsh History course, you will be choosing to learn in a highly respected department that succeeds in bringing the past to life. The Department of History and Welsh History is recognized as one of the leading History departments in Britain. The aim of this degree is to develop your historical interests, broadening and deepening your knowledge and understanding of the subject by studying specific elements of Welsh history. The program is designed to be very flexible, so it is possible to tailor the History and Welsh History degree to your own specific interests. As part of your degree at Aberystwyth University you will develop valuable skills including the ability to process large amounts of information and communicate effectively both orally and in writing.

Most of us are curious about the past and about the way human society has evolved over time. As well as being interesting in itself, studying history offers a vision that can help us understand the events of the world today.

When studying this degree you will study Welsh history modules and also choose from the wide range of other modules (History) offered by the Department of History and Welsh History. You will look at what effect the events of the past have had on the present and foster analysis, interpretation and communication skills, which are so important in everyday life.

It has been possible to study History as a subject at Aberystwyth University since it was founded in 1872, and over the past 140 years we have perfected the degree plans we offer to ensure you get the best possible History degree. The degree scheme in History is an exciting and interesting one.

The interests of our lecturers vary from the ancient to the modern world, so we can offer you various cultural, economic, social and political history modules from all periods. The lecturers are all involved in recent research as well. In the 2014 Research Excellence Framework assessment, 95% of research carried out at Aberystwyth University was of an internationally recognized standard. We can therefore give you the opportunity to develop your talents and historical interests by studying closely with tutors who are experts in their fields.

We place great emphasis on learning in small groups, and are almost unique in providing one-to-one tutorial sessions. This will be a great advantage for you as a student.

As well as the excellent University Library, History students at Aberystwyth can enjoy full membership of the National Library of Wales. There are only five copyright libraries throughout Britain, and our National Library is one of them. It holds more than 6 million books, maps and prints, all within five minutes of the Department. These resources will be extremely valuable as you study your Special Subject and write your extended essay in the third year.

There is a close-knit and friendly community in the Department, which is located in the heart of the University campus. We are proud of the friendly and informal relationship between the staff and the students. There is a lively History Society which organizes lectures by guest speakers, visits to places of interest and social events throughout the year. We also have a number of links with foreign universities, which means you could take advantage of the opportunity to spend time abroad enjoying a different historical culture.
