Course Description

By choosing to study History at Aberystwyth University you will study one of the most valuable subjects. Most of us are curious about the past and the way human societies have evolved over time. A degree in History will allow you to put the past into perspective and equip yourself with the analytical skills of interpretation, analysis and communication which are so essential in everyday life and which employers are very keen to find.

History has been taught in Aberystwyth since 1872, which means that our department is the oldest in Wales and one of the earliest in Britain. Our degrees are innovative which ensures you get the best qualification.

We were rated highly by our students in the Annual Student Survey (NSS). Our subject areas range from early to modern history, political history, social history, economic and cultural history.

We have a copyright library on campus, the National Library of Wales. Our department has strong links with the heritage sector, and an established portfolio of student placements. In the past, students have spent up to three weeks at the National Library of Wales (including Welsh-medium opportunities), the Royal Commission on the Antiquities of Wales, and the Society of Antiquaries in London. These placements offer an opportunity to gain practical experience and an understanding of the heritage sector, and are very valuable on any CV!

Tweet from students on a placement in 2014 with the Society of Antiquaries: 'Saw three copies of the Magna Carta at once today!' 'Credit to Aber University for helping me get the placement - can't wait until tomorrow'. Our graduates have been successful in securing a profession in many different fields; Education; The Law; Archivists; Publishers; Politicians; Civil Servants; The media; The Armed Forces; Entrepreneurs.
