Course Description

On the Pure Mathematics and Statistics degree at Aberystwyth University you will study mathematical concepts and the identification and analysis of shapes and patterns combined with data collation and calculation. You will learn how to solve problems and develop theories within mathematics, whilst acquiring a firm understanding of the techniques of collection, classification, organisation, analysis and interpretation of data. Statistics uses mathematical analysis, experiments and quantified models to evaluate hypotheses or analyse real-world problems. Suitably qualified statisticians are needed to process the enormous quantities of data generated by modern society, evaluate patterns within the data, and use those to inform decision making and strategy planning.

Graduates of Pure Mathematics and Statistics are in significant demand across many industries for their problem-solving abilities, clear analytical thought processes and capacity for logical argument. Mathematics has been taught at Aberystwyth since the foundation of the university in 1872, making it the oldest Mathematics department in Wales. Despite our heritage, we have continued to innovate ensuring that the degree schemes we offer will provide you with the best Mathematics degree you can possibly obtain. A degree in Mathematics will open a wide range of career paths to you, and this degree is accredited by the Institute for Mathematics and its Applications (IMA), the UK's learned and professional society for mathematics, directly contributing to your recognition as a Chartered Mathematician. The department also offers several modules which are taught through the medium of Welsh.

This degree will introduce you to the essential core disciplines of Mathematics including algebra, calculus, geometry and mathematical analysis. Topics in your second and third years may include analysis and partial differential equations, abstract and linear algebra, distributions and estimation, regression, anova, statistical modelling and mechanics. This degree is delivered through lectures, tutorials and practicals. You will be assessed through a combination of coursework, presentations, reports and examinations. You will be assigned a personal tutor throughout your degree course, who will help you with any problems or queries, whether these are academic-related or personal issues. You should feel free to contact them at any time for help and advice.

This course will develop your understanding of a range of theories and processes in Mathematics. You will develop your written and oral communication skills and your ability to work independently and in a group. Some of the skills you will develop include: research, data analysis, enhanced mathematical and computational skills, problem-solving, creative thinking, information technology, independent working, time management, organisation, meeting deadlines and self-motivation. You will enhance your ability to express ideas, communicate information clearly and concisely and accommodate other viewpoints. Work experience will greatly improve your CV and make you more attractive to employers. You are encouraged to contact the Careers Advisory Service in relation to YES (Year in Employment Scheme) and Go Wales for assistance in securing work placements alongside your degree.

Your degree will prepare you for a broad range of employment or training options, including teacher training. Typical sectors include: statistical analysis and computational statistics, aeronautical engineering, accountancy and banking, risk analysis and actuarial work, financial management and investment analysis and information technology.

This programme will meet the educational requirements of the Chartered Mathematician designation, awarded by the Institute of Mathematics and its Applications, when it is followed by subsequent training and experience in employment to obtain equivalent competences to those specified by the Quality Assurance Agency (QAA) for taught masters degrees.
