Course Description

Students who study now will still be practising in 2050, it is critical that we train doctors for the future using innovative technologies to tackle existing and emerging threats to individual and population health. Our Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery (MBChB), 5 year degree programme is full-time and leads to a Primary Medical Qualification that will allow graduates to register provisionally with the General Medical Council (GMC).

This degree will prepare you for a rewarding career in the NHS as a foundation doctor and beyond. We have an integrated modern curriculum, where you’ll be on placement in primary and secondary care from the early months of your course. You’ll be given a robust foundation in the clinical sciences combined with clinical experience, leadership, quality improvement, innovation and technology for health.

Your training for clinical experience will include placements in Primary Care, Mental Health, 5 Acute Care providers and tertiary units in Essex, such as the St Andrew’s Centre for Plastic Surgery and Burns and the Essex Cardiothoracic Centre. On campus teaching will take place in a cutting edge purpose built School of Medicine, fitted out with the latest laboratory equipment and cadaveric anatomy suite.

Our curriculum is innovative, student-centred and community-based, which combined with the East of England location with a mix of urban and rural areas, offers a diverse and all-encompassing experience for medical students.

We’ll build your knowledge up gradually and aspects of learning will be revisited throughout the duration of the course, so that links can be formed between scientific concepts, clinical practice and professionalism to deepen your understanding.

Accredited by the General Medical Council (GMC), this primary medical qualification entitles the holder to apply to the GMC for registration to practise medicine in the UK.

The aim of the course is to prepare you for clinical decision making and the capability to practice effectively as a doctor in a multi-professional team. You’ll be assessed by a combination of exams at the end of each year, and a portfolio of work that is completed throughout your course The exams will be in the form of OSCEs (Objective Structured Clinical Exams), online examinations and anatomy spot examinations.
