Course Description
Under the tutelage of some of Wales' leading writers, this unique course enables you to combine the study of Welsh with creative writing. You will study modules based on practice in poetry, prose writing, script writing and drama, and your linguistic skills and employability will be further improved by modules relating to the professional use of the Welsh language. You will explore the curiosity and creative power of the Welsh language and study academic modules that are more traditional in tone, and a journey that could lead to a career as a screenwriter, writer, editor, or local government, broadcasting and teaching.
If you are in your element reading Welsh literature and are serious about developing your own writing, a Welsh BA with Creative Writing may be the degree course for you! Various modules - some focusing on poets from Aneirin to Catrin Dafydd, novelists from Daniel Owen to Manon Steffan Ros, and playwrights from Saunders Lewis to Aled Jones Williams - will enrich your literary experience and feed your creativity. And under the guidance of lecturers who are experienced writers, there will be an opportunity to develop your own creative writing within a series of specialist modules.
You will have the opportunity within this degree not only to study and enjoy one of the most remarkable Celtic literatures in the world, but also the opportunity to follow more practically oriented modules which will be excellent preparation for a career and a job. This course will enable you to research independently, to think originally, to get to know Welsh literature and Welsh culture in depth and to master the different tones of the language. You will also gain an awareness of the Welsh language in wider international contexts. What is the relationship of the Welsh language with other languages of the world? How does the fortunes of the language compare with languages such as Basque and Irish? How have Welsh writers and poets responded to global themes such as slavery, the Holocaust and the ecological challenge of the modern industrial world? From the earliest periods to the present, the choices in terms of modules are wide and the opportunities to expand your horizons are endless. 'International Experience Year' and 'Year on Placement' options are available for this course. You will have the opportunity to consider these options fully after starting your course in Bangor and you can apply to transfer to one of these options at the appropriate time.
