Course Description

On this joint honors course, your modules will be divided between Welsh and Linguistics. Welsh is a broad field that covers the legends of the Mabinogi and the post-modern work of authors such as Mihangel Morgan. Linguistics is the study of the structure of language, how languages are acquired, how they are used, and how language impairment can impair them. As Wales increasingly embraces bilingualism you will also study the professional use of the Welsh language and aim for a career in the marketing, local government, broadcasting, publishing, teaching, translation and arts sectors.

You will study these subjects in a center that has a good reputation throughout the world for studying Welsh, Celtic Studies and Bilingualism, and that is located in an area where Welsh is the first language for the majority. This offers extremely valuable opportunities to do fieldwork in areas such as bilingualism, language acquisition and transmission, and how children relate to language.

By combining Welsh and Linguistics you will be armed with a wide knowledge of language, literature as well as scientific skills that are appropriate for all types of careers. You will learn how to respond originally to literature, and come to understand more about the history and sociology of the Welsh language. This is enriched by looking at linguistic developments globally, and gaining a scientific understanding of how language is used and processed by individuals and communities, including bilingual ones.

Enjoy all this alongside learning practical skills that are increasingly in demand in today's Welsh workplaces, from writing confidently and effectively, to translating and scripting, and from collecting and analyzing data to presenting research findings in a clear, organized and effective. This course offers a special opportunity to combine the literary, the creative, the linguistic and the scientific. Certainly, the variety of the course is extremely valuable, and both subjects offer you a wide range of skills and knowledge.

You will have the opportunity to consider these options fully after starting your course in Bangor and you can apply to transfer to one of these options at the appropriate time.
