Course Description

There is a close connection between music and literature in Wales. By combining the two subjects you will be equipped with knowledge of language, literature and musical skills appropriate to a good variety of careers including the arts and heritage sectors and education and broadcasting. There are opportunities to join the University Symphony Orchestra, Chamber Choir and various other student societies and your musical experience will extend far beyond the lecture room. Welsh in Bangor is also much more than a degree course. It is a cultural package that will enable you to play a professional and fulfilling role in creating a truly bilingual Wales.

This is a course that allows you to enjoy all the wealth of literature, drama and creative culture of the Welsh language alongside all the wealth of the musical world in Wales and across the world. It is a dynamic combination of the creative, the practical and the academic and that in two areas that have a close and exciting connection with each other. Students who enjoy creative activity can follow poetry and prose workshops in Welsh, and at the same time follow music composition modules. This is much more than a degree course: it offers a cultural package that will enable you to play a creative role in contemporary Welsh culture. Remember also that Bangor University's dynamic cultural community gives you the opportunity to join choirs, bands and orchestras, as well as perform at eisteddfodau and cultural festivals. Bangor University has two concert halls, four electroacoustic studios, and Canolfan Pontio hosts many events in the fields of drama, literature, film and music. By combining Welsh and Music you will be armed with a wide knowledge of language, literature as well as musical skills that are appropriate for all types of careers. You will learn new analytical skills in order to respond originally to literature and music, and you will also see the relevance of the Welsh tradition to some of the world's most important cultural forms, considering how writers and musicians have responded to the demands of the times. Enjoy all this alongside learning practical skills that are increasingly in demand in Welsh workplaces today, from writing confidently and effectively in Welsh, to translating and scripting; and from performing, composing and using music in the community, to learn the age-old skills of harmony and counterpoint. The variety and richness of this degree course is extremely valuable, and the two subjects really enrich each other. 'International Experience Year' and 'Year on Placement' options are available for this course. You will have the opportunity to consider these options fully after starting your course in Bangor and you can apply to transfer to one of these options at the appropriate time.
