Songwriting remains one of the UK’s biggest exports, with UK music stronger than ever. Popular song is the heart of the industry, and global demand for new songs is high. On our MA Songwriting you will nurture your musical creativity, focus and develop your professional portfolio, forge new collaborative networks, and engage in research designed to support your career as a songwriter.

The course is aimed at unpublished songwriters wishing to develop their craft to professional level, and published songwriters wishing to achieve academic accreditation while exploring their creativity.

We maintain strong links with industry professionals, guest artists, and guest lecturers.

MA Songwriting (Distance Learning) Our distance learning Songwriting Master’s Degree is a world leader in the innovation of teaching and learning songwriting online. The course brings together songwriters from all over the world who wish to study from their home situation and students have attended the course from Australia, China, Germany, Greece, Ireland, Italy, Puerto Rico, Singapore, Turkey, the USA and the UK.

The Distance Learning option is a blended learning design which combines formal online lectures with regular personal tutorials. Week to week you study a workbook of specific tasks which are reviewed and discussed with your tutor. Peer-based teaching and learning occurs in our regular Songwriters Circle webinars in which students from all over the world meet to share and critique their work. Our low-residency weeks in historic Corsham Court provide lectures and events around which our social connections are formed. You’re welcome to come along to visit us in Corsham Court, although this is not compulsory as our lectures and classes are filmed for streaming anytime, anywhere.

CAREER OPPORTUNITIES There is a broad range of professional outcomes from this course and our graduates now work as performers, lecturers, researchers, agents, signed artists, signed writers, teachers, therapists and publishers. This course is also an excellent grounding if you’re interested in going on to PhD study.

Assessments range from simple audio sketches in the early stages to full album productions in the final stages; each of which is assessed for quality and market focus. On the research modules, formal, researched and referenced papers express your intellectual and analytical development, and presentation skills bring your work to life.

You’ll already be very much engaged in songwriting - this course is not suitable for beginners. However, lack of knowledge of music theory isn’t a hindrance. You need "ideas". Where you don’t have a degree but have professional experience, we positively welcome you to apply.

For students staying in student halls, costs of water, gas, electricity, wifi are generally included in the rental. Students in smaller cities where accommodation is in walking/biking distance transport costs tend to be significantly smaller.
