Course Description
Our BSc Information Systems and Management will equip you with the skills to apply information systems to the problems encountered in management. It covers the design, implementation and operation of information systems together with the practice and theory of management.
Accredited by the British Computer Society, this course provides an opportunity to gain theoretical knowledge and practical skills in both computing and management, striking a balance between the underlying theories and the current techniques relevant to the marketplace.
The programme aims to produce graduates who, with appropriate experience, will become hybrid managers (i.e. managers/information systems analysts/computer scientists), well versed in the tools, techniques, approaches and philosophies necessary for the successful introduction of complex information and communication technologies in today's fast-changing world.

The Department of Computer Science and Information Systems at Birkbeck is one of the longest-established computing departments in the UK; we celebrate our 65th anniversary in 2022. We provide a stimulating teaching and research environment for both part-time and full-time students.

In the most recent Research Excellence Framework (REF), more than 75% of our research outputs in Computer Science were ranked world-leading or internationally excellent.

We have four modern computing laboratories in the Department, with a total of 133 workstations. The labs have projection facilities and are air-conditioned. Our wide range of software runs on a number of platforms including Unix, Windows and Linux. The local area network is a switched gigabit/10gigabit ethernet. The Department and College computers are connected to the JANET academic network. Departmental computer services and networks are managed and supported by the Department's Systems Group.

Qualification requirements
Access to Higher Education Diploma with a minimum of 15 credits achieved at Merit or Distinction in computing or business units.
We welcome applicants without traditional entry qualifications as we base decisions on our own assessment of qualifications, knowledge and previous work experience. We may waive formal entry requirements based on judgement of academic potential. FOUNDATION YEAR DEGREES If you need extra support before starting an undergraduate degree, we offer a BSc Information Systems and Management with Foundation Year degree, which provides an extra year of supported study. This is an ideal route if you are returning to study after a gap, or if you have not previously studied this subject, or if you did not achieve the grades you need for a place on this degree. Once you successfully complete the Foundation Year, you will automatically advance onto the main degree. ALTERNATIVE ENTRY ROUTES Entry routes are available through the Certificate of Higher Education in Information Technology and in Higher Education Introductory Studies (Business pathway).

Birkbeck, University of London (BBK) was established in 1823, and takes a different stance towards admissions than many other universities. Applicants are encouraged by BKK to apply even if they don’t possess the traditional qualifications normally required, as applications here are also considered based on an assessment of your knowledge on the subject, and any work experience you might have.
