Course Description
Product design engineers have key skills within an engineering team to help transform ideas into practical solutions, that can be trialled and tested to provide a reliable product, method or process.
We will support you build in confidence and develop a wide range of transferable skills and will expand your knowledge of the qualities of materials and of methods of construction and manufacturing to create successful products.
Your creativity may provide a solution that a company needs to expand their market reach and connect with new users. For instance, you may design products which are easier for people with limited strength or disabilities to use.
You will gain key employability skills and be encouraged to take up placements, helping you to go straight into employment upon completion of your studies.
During the foundation year, you'll develop academic skills and you'll learn and understand about core aspects of engineering, science and maths, so you are ready, confident and enthusiastic to study at degree level.
As you progress through the degree, you’ll use the pioneering CDIO (Conceive, Design, Implement, Operate) approach to problem solve product design engineering issues. The CDIO approach is an international engineering education model, developed by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). It allows you to learn in a practical, hands-on way to find creative, evaluated solutions to industry related engineering challenges and we are one of only a handful of universities in the UK to offer CDIO.
On completion of the course, you could go on to work in a wide range of industries from Consumer products, Transport, Aerospace, Health or telecom & communication sectors.
Consider this BEng with Foundation degree if you know you would like to work in engineering but need to strengthen some core subjects first, or are still considering your engineering direction in preparation for your degree.
