Course Description

We offer an innovative BA (Hons) degree program in Early Years Education and Professional Practice which offers a diverse range of relevant practice and theory modules. There are two study paths available: •BA (Hons) Early Years Professional Practice (with Early Years Practitioner Status) •BA (Hons) Early Years Education and Professional Practice with SYBC (Bilingual) In these programmes, you will gain Early Years Practitioner status Qualified Early Years (SYBC), gaining practical work experience combined with theoretical and policy knowledge as well as the transferable skills required for effective Early Years practice, including the management of Early Years settings. The program was developed in direct response to changes in Early Years provision in Wales and the UK in order to provide qualified early childhood specialists who work with young children and their families. A fundamental aspect of the degree is the 700 hours of assessed practice-based experience that you will complete in order to gain a SYBC. This includes a weekly placement during each year of your study, in a range of relevant settings such as Early Years/Foundation Phase classrooms, private nurseries, integrated children's centers and day care facilities. As part of your degree you will also spend time in our Forest School provision on campus, where you will get first-hand experience of this dynamic approach to early education. In addition, you will also have the opportunity to spend time in our MiniMets room which was developed to enable you to experience excellence in practice through practical sessions. By gaining a degree that is at the forefront of changes in the sector, your qualification will be highly valued by potential employers in this field. This degree also provides a solid foundation for a range of related careers, such as family support work, health and social care and community work. The bilingual degree focuses on developing your academic and practical understanding of early education in a bilingual context. Although some of the program is delivered through the medium of English, most of the bilingual course is available through the medium of Welsh, including the support of a personal Welsh-speaking tutor and Welsh-medium locations. Assessments can be delivered in English or Welsh and the Welsh content can be tailored to suit your linguistic ability. The course is designed to meet the growing demand for graduates with bilingual abilities and qualifications. In order to graduate with the bilingual degree, students must study at least 80 credits in each year through the medium of Welsh. Students who follow this route will also be eligible for a Y Coleg Cymraeg Cenedlaethol scholarship worth up to £3000 over the three years. * Note: This program will be subject to review during December 2019.
