Course Description

By combining Welsh and French, you will learn a wealth of skills and knowledge that can be used in many areas. These will also be of benefit in the global working world and help open the doors to a variety of possible careers.

The Welsh language course is relevant to contemporary Wales and is taught by a School that has been recognized for the quality and impact of its research. The aim of the course is to produce graduates who have a thorough understanding (academicly and practically) of the Welsh language, its literature and culture, a high level of oral and written linguistic skills, and developed employability and creative skills which relevant to modern Wales.

It offers core and optional modules to give you a foundation in terms of language and literature, as well as an opportunity to specialize in areas of personal interest or in terms of your career.

France is an important figure on the European and world stage, and famous for a rich and sophisticated culture. French is one of the official working languages of the European community, and it is the language of culture and diplomacy on a global level.

We offer French to advanced level students and beginners. In terms of language acquisition, this course will enable you to develop your writing, speaking and listening skills through a variety of learning activities, and using a variety of audiovisual materials. In your first year, in addition to your language lessons, an introduction to history and culture will aim to provide a solid foundation for more specialist studies as you follow your course.

Your understanding of French will be further developed and refined during your year abroad, when you will have direct experience of life in a French-speaking country.

It is important to remember that studying languages does not mean studying the language and nothing else. It means investigating many aspects of a country. In Cardiff, we aim to offer a truly broad course including optional modules in film, literature, art history, politics and history.

As a joint honors student, you will find that there are often areas and perspectives that connect subjects, whether it is critical analysis, historical contexts or recent research.

Each school involved in delivering the degree offers a challenging course of modules, which is supported by a friendly atmosphere and excellent relationships between staff and students.

On completion of this four-year programme, you will have a high level of language proficiency as well as a critical understanding of key aspects of contemporary Welsh and French literature, culture, politics and society.
