Course Description

Many students are of the opinion that studying a joint honors degree is a worthwhile experience as they can see the similarities and differences between the two subjects. By combining Welsh and Italian, you will learn a wealth of skills and knowledge that can be used in many areas. These will also be of benefit in the global working world and help open the doors to a variety of possible careers.

WELSH

The Welsh language course is relevant to contemporary Wales and is taught by a School that has been recognized for the quality and impact of its research. The aim of the course is to produce graduates who have a thorough understanding (academicly and practically) of the Welsh language, its literature and culture, a high level of oral and written linguistic skills, and developed employability and creative skills which relevant to modern Wales.

It offers core and optional modules to give you a foundation in terms of language and literature, as well as an opportunity to specialize in areas of personal interest or in terms of your career.

ITALIAN

Since Roman times, Italy's contribution to world culture has been immense as is evident to anyone who visits the country, even for a short time. But Italy is not only a country of exceptional cultural importance. Italy is also a significant political partner in the European Union, and a leading force in fields such as engineering and architecture. It is the home of the design and fashion industries.

Italian at Cardiff University enables you to study, analyze and evaluate current developments across the Italian-speaking world, as well as the cultures and values of the past. Once you have studied Italian, you will be ready to take advantage of the wide opportunities open to graduates of the language today

You will develop high-level language skills with the aim of achieving competences close to a native standard together with detailed knowledge of aspects of culture, history, politics and society in Italy. You will spend your third year in Italy, practicing and developing your language skills.

We offer Italian for advanced students and beginners. In terms of language acquisition, this course will enable you to develop your writing, speaking and listening skills through a variety of learning activities, and using a variety of audiovisual materials. In your first year, in addition to your language lessons, an introduction to history and culture will aim to provide a solid foundation for more specialist studies as you follow your course.

It is important to remember that studying languages does not mean studying the language and nothing else. It means looking at many aspects of the country and its culture, its social structures and institutions, its politics, its history, its literature and its cinema. By studying such areas you can gain a better understanding of Italian culture and how it has evolved over the centuries, developing into what it is today.

As a joint honors student, you will find that there are often areas and perspectives that connect subjects, whether it is critical analysis, historical contexts or recent research.

Each school involved in delivering the degree offers a challenging course of modules, which is supported by a friendly atmosphere and excellent relationships between staff and students.

After completing this four-year programme, you will have a high level of language proficiency as well as a critical understanding of key aspects of contemporary Welsh and Italian literature, culture, politics and society.
