Business Management with Welsh with a Professional Placement Year BSc (Hons)

The BSc Business Management and Welsh language course is an innovative and modern one which seeks to combine the main elements of a Business Management degree with the study of the Welsh language and Welsh culture and prepares students for opportunities within the changing labor market in Wales. This combination is intended to improve the variety of professional work opportunities available to graduates by providing a multidisciplinary and broad education in the fields of Business Management and the Welsh language, as well as offering flexible options to students who want to follow different subjects that develop skills language.

By studying Business Management, you will develop a thorough knowledge of the main disciplines relevant to management and business, together with an appreciation of the different functional areas that make up business organisations. Therefore, you will develop a solid core of knowledge in the field of Business Management which will enable you to build on strong foundations to specialize in areas that interest you and reflect your career aspirations. By studying the Welsh language, you will develop high-level skills in the language itself, as well as developing a thorough understanding of its place in contemporary Wales. After the first year, you will have the opportunity to develop expertise by choosing from a variety of optional modules. These cover a variety of areas that are particularly relevant to management and business, including linguistic planning and language policy, sociology of language, sociolinguistics, language technology and professional translation, as well as literary, linguistic and cultural subjects. In particular, the course provides the opportunity to gain work experience in a professional business environment and enables students to apply the knowledge developed during the first two years of doing the course in a specific professional setting.

There are a number of synergies between the two aspects of the course, such as the role of the Welsh language in the modern workplace, its place in a digital economy and the role of marketing in promoting it, to name but a few. There is a great demand for graduates with business management skills as well as Welsh skills at a high level. Cardiff is the capital of Welsh politics, business and media, and the course will be able to take advantage of both Schools' close links with the industry through the use of the work placements programme.

In general, the Business Management and Welsh (with Professional Work Placement) degree prepares students for a wide variety of careers in business and develops their ability to work bilingually at a high level in Welsh and English.

Students doing this course will be eligible to apply for an Incentive Scholarship of £500 per year from the Coleg Cymraeg Cenedlaethol, as they will study at least 33% (40 credits per year) of the scholarship subject through the medium of Welsh. An Incentive Scholarship will normally be for a period of three years. If a student does a four-year course, an Incentive Scholarship will be available for three of those years.
