Course Description

The Law and Welsh LLB program is challenging and exciting and gives you the opportunity to develop the skills needed for a career in law and a wide variety of professions. In addition to the foundation modules which cover the academic training required to become a solicitor or barrister in England and Wales, referred to as a 'Law Qualification Degree', we offer a wide range of elective areas of study covering traditional and contemporary legal subjects. The program is taught jointly by the Welsh language, and Law and Politics schools, giving you the opportunity to study in detail in either discipline.

Our degree enables you to complete the academic stages of training to be a barrister or solicitor and to progress directly to the vocational training stages for the legal profession in England and Wales: the Professional Bar Training Course or the Legal Practice. We are the only University in the Russell Group to offer both of these courses, which means you have the option to stay with us in Cardiff to complete your entire legal education. The Legal Practice Course has regularly received the highest Solicitors Regulation Authority / Law Society rating.

The devolution of the Welsh Government and the introduction of the Welsh Language Act has meant that the ability to speak and understand Welsh to a high level is attractive to employers. Studying in Cardiff is an opportunity to benefit from research that is relevant to the society that contributes to the development of the Welsh language in the twenty-first century.

Notable features

We are committed to developing your employability, with our dedicated Careers Adviser on hand two days a week in the Law building. We offer a variety of extracurricular activities, some unique to Cardiff University, which give our students a competitive advantage.

**Pro Bono Plans***

We work in partnership with lawyers, charities and voluntary organizations to give students the opportunity to practice and expand their skills.

Two of our most established schemes are our Innocent Project (the first in the UK to overturn a conviction by the Court of Appeal) and our NHS Continuing Healthcare Scheme which is unique to Cardiff.

Both initiatives have won or been shortlisted for prestigious national awards and have given support to vulnerable groups and members of the community who struggle to access legal aid. You can also apply for a place on our scheme with the Welsh Rugby Union, where we advise amateur rugby clubs on legal matters.

The application process for each of our schemes is different and we cannot guarantee that students will secure a place on the scheme of their choice, or on any of our schemes. Our portfolio is regularly reviewed and what we offer is subject to change.

Mooting

Our students are encouraged to compete in annual mooting competitions. These competitions give you the opportunity to present legal issues before a judge, against opposing counsel.

Controversy is a great skill to add to your CV and provides valuable experience of public speaking in a formal setting.

Client interview competition

Our students are encouraged to take part in an annual client interview competition, presided over by Sir Geoffrey Bindman QC.

You will gain interviewing and counseling experience in a mock setting and will be assessed against specific assessment criteria which include interpersonal skills and your ability to deal with legal problems.
