Course Description

This course will appeal to both experienced and new writers who wish to gain the knowledge and skills relevant to professional practice in commercial settings which produce creative content for print and across digital formats. You will be introduced to the fast-changing world of commercial publishing, and will be given an understanding of and exposure to the many different sectors of the publishing industry. A digital publishing element will teach you how social media and web publishing is now vital to finding and sustaining your own community of readers.

This course would be ideal for those who wish to combine a focus on the development of creative writing skills with a strong theoretical and practical understanding of how the publishing industry works. It is ideal for anyone interested in getting hands-on publishing experience alongside developing their creative practice.

This course is designed to improve your skills as a creative writer, particularly in the fields of novel writing and short story writing, while at the same time introducing you to the basics of how publishing works as an industry and the basic core publisher roles. If you are interested in learning how you, as a writer, can engage with the publishing industry and even work within it, this course will develop the skills and experience you need. Creative Writing and Publishing MA enables you to aspire to a professional role that will match your interests and draw upon all of your talents. We welcome writers of all genres with recent graduates developing projects in literary fiction, fantasy, romance, dystopian, science fiction and young adult fiction.

In order to prepare you for the publishing world visiting lecturers from the industry contribute to the programme throughout the teaching year. We are pleased to announce that in 2020, Stephen Page has been appointed Honorary Visiting Professor of Publishing for three years. Stephen is CEO of Faber & Faber and one of the most prominent and influential figures in the world of publishing.
