Course Description

Adult nurses play crucial roles in healthcare settings by restoring and promoting health, supporting patients and their families, and responding to the varied healthcare needs of individual patients or communities.

During this course – thanks to strong links with service providers across the region – we are able to offer a range of placement opportunities embedded within all three years of the course.

You will benefit from shared learning opportunities with students from the other fields of nursing practice, but will also engage in field of practice specific learning opportunities throughout the programme, to ensure that you develop Adult nursing field of practice identity, knowledge and skills.

From September 2020, all nursing degree students will receive at least £5,000 a year with up to £3,000 additional funding available.

Due to the high demand for this course, once the course is full, offers will be made for the next available cohort.

Key features

• You will be taught by a team of highly qualified registered nurses, researchers and other healthcare professionals enabling us to deliver high-quality professional education to our diverse studentship.

• You will have the opportunity to complete a variety of practice placements, which consolidate your expertise within your chose field of practice

• Purpose-built facilities, including clinical skills suites, a state-of-the-art simulation suite, a moving and handling area, cardiopulmonary resuscitation room and a sensory room, allow you to apply theory to practice in a safe environment.

• Graduates are eligible to register with the NMC which allows you the opportunity to practise in acute and community based settings, and apply for international employment opportunities.

• Professionally accredited by the Nursing and Midwifery Council, registered nurses can start on a salary of more than £24,907 (NHS pay scales 2019/20).

• Gain international experience related to your studies through our DMU Global programme *, which has seen students take part in healthcare programmes in Peru, improve the health of communities in India and examine the social and health inequalities faced in America.

• You will study a range of modules including Influences on Wellbeing, Acute Care, Complex Care, Managing Complexities in Nursing Practise and Consolidating Care and Professional Practise. This allows students to gain a holistic understanding of key considerations when caring for patients, linking theory to practice.

Learning is supported by a strong system of personal tutors and teaching teams, clinical work placements and enthusiastic mentors. Teaching methods include: lectures, seminars, presentations, tutorials, enquiry-based problem solving and independent e-learning. You will complete blocks of clinical placements 37.5 hours per week and blocks comprised of theory and independent learning hours up to an equivalent of 37.5 hours each week. Students in practice placements are allocated a mentor to help develop and support learning. Practice is assessed through the completion of your practice portfolio, clinical skills log, submission of service user/ expert by experience feedback and undertaking the required number of hours in practice. Theory is assessed through written assignments including as essays, reports, Critical incident analysis, blog (weblog), examinations, and culminating in your dissertation.

Must be from a minimum of 2 A2 subjects or equivalent. We do not accept tariff points achieved from General Studies, Key Skills or Music Qualifications

112 points from a minimum of 2 A2 subjects or equivalent. We do not accept tariff points achieved from General Studies, Key Skills or Music Qualifications

112 points including at least two subjects at advanced higher level with a Science subject at grade C or better. General Studies is not accepted.

Must be in a relevant subject such as Health & Social Care or Science. We will accept other credit combinations providing a tariff score of 80 is achieved.

Must be achieved from a BTEC in Health & Social Care or Applied Science.
