Course Description
Our MA in Ancient Philosophy will prepare you for higher research into beliefs and opinions concerning the nature of knowledge, existence and reality through the study of literature, history and philosophical thinking itself, with the focus on the Ancient Greeks and Romans.
This flexible course can be taken full-time over one year or part-time over two years. It consists of a series of option modules and the MA dissertation, which forms the heart of your study and is based on a subject of your own particular interest.
We have created the course to provide research training in ancient philosophy which builds on the knowledge and skills developed during your undergraduate degree, enabling you to make intellectual progress to fully independent research at a higher level.
You will join a department with a wide range of expertise, an international reputation for academic excellence in ancient philosophy and which consistently ranks as one of the top classics and ancient history departments, both in the UK and internationally. This expertise has enabled us to create centres that have become the focus for vital research activity including the Centre for Classical Reception; the Centre for the Study of the Ancient Mediterranean and the Near East; and the Durham Centre for Ancient and Medieval Philosophy.
As well as being taught by subject-area experts in the department, you will have unique access to our extensive library for research that features a collection of 8,000 volumes, including ancient texts in the original and in translation.
Course Structure
The Ancient Philosophy Dissertation will nurture your research skills and help you prepare for independent academic research in Classics in general and Ancient Philosophy in particular. You will be expected to attend both weekly MA and designated departmental research seminars.
