Course Description

The MA in Christian Theology (Catholic Studies) embraces the Department’s close relationship with contemporary Catholicism and provides a significant and meaningful understanding of Catholic theological tradition and its context within the broader Christian theology.

As a department with a strong research reputation, much of our teaching is informed by staff research and focused on developing you as an independent researcher, able to pursue and explore your own interests and questions.

The Department offers an exciting and thought-provoking learning environment that exists as a result of our commitment to academic engagement with Catholic theology and religion. This is reflected in our close links with the Centre for Catholic Studies, the Bede Chair in Catholic Theology and the St Hilda Chair in Catholic Social Thought and Practice.

The course offers a core module on Christian theology as well as optional modules on subjects such as change in contemporary Catholicism, Catholic social thought and the thought of Thomas Aquinas in context. It also includes a dissertation on a subject of your own choosing.

There is a strong international outlook within the Department. This is key to our academic work and achievement and is highlighted not only by the international nature of the department’s student body but also through the international activity of our staff who regularly present and publish work around the world.

Core modules:

Classic Texts in Christian Theology introduces you to a series of classic texts from the history of Christian theology and expanding your critical understanding of its nature, goals and tasks. Undertaking this module will also raise your levels of awareness and engagement with the appropriate research methods and approaches in the study of this subject.

The Dissertation is a 12,000-15,000-word project that will add to your knowledge and understanding of a subject in Christian theology and religion that is of particular interest to you. The aim of the dissertation is also to help develop your skills in the research, analysis, and the bringing together of texts, data, ideas and arguments around the subject.

Grading & Study Time

Teaching in the Department reflects the breadth of research being carried out by academic staff, and as a research-led department we place a strong focus on encouraging the development of your own skills and abilities as independent researchers. Much of the learning takes place in small group seminars and in tutorials, providing a supportive and relaxed study environment in which to explore the content in more detail. Some classes are delivered via lecture-style approach in order to provide structured in-depth information. You will also receive feedback on completed work in tutorials.   You will be required to complete a dissertation on a subject of particular interest and you will receive guidance from your supervisor on the area for study and your state of progress. Assessment is conducted in several ways depending on your choice of optional module but is mainly through coursework essays. Other methods include oral examinations, the delivery of presentations as well as written exams. A dissertation of 12,000-15,000 words, written on a subject of your own choice and approved by your supervisor is a significant part of the course and will make up a third of your marks.
