Course Description
Our MA in Christian Theology gives you the opportunity to explore one of the world’s major religions and its theological foundations from a range of perspectives, using the wealth of knowledge in the Department about the nature and belief of the Christian faith.
You will benefit from our long-established academic strengths covering significant theological periods of time including Greek and Latin patristics, which relates to the writing and doctrine of early Christian theologians, the medieval Church and Reformation, contemporary Catholic and Anglican theology, theological ethics and philosophical theology.
The course consists of a core module introducing major texts from the history of Christian theology, a dissertation and a choice of optional modules ranging from Faith and Reason to a range of biblical language studies.
The University shares in the religious heritage of this cathedral city and you will be part of a department which is highly regarded around the world for its teaching of religion, Christian theology and biblical studies and which offers unique access to the religious works and writings contained in its historic libraries.

Core modules:
Classic Texts in Christian Theology introduces major historical texts and enables you to understand both the nature, goal and tasks of Christian theology itself and the research methods that are used in its study.
The Dissertation consists of a 12,000-15,000-word project that enables you to deepen your knowledge and understanding of a particular subject in the field of theology and religion that you have chosen with support from your supervisor. The independent nature of the dissertation will develop your skills in the research, analysis and synthesis of texts, data, ideas and arguments.

The standard entry requirement is a BA (Honours) degree (UK 2:1 or equivalent, for example, a GPA of 3.7 on a 4.0 scale) in Theology, Religious Studies or a related discipline.
The two principal exceptions to this rule are as follows:
Graduates of other disciplines who have studied at undergraduate or equivalent level in one or more of the areas in which they hope to work, through their first degrees, through training for the ministry of the churches, and so on.
Students from overseas universities who have successfully reached a point in their theological studies comparable with completion of a British BA at the standard noted above - for example, on the German model, passing the Zwischenprüfung or Kolloquium and two semesters at the Hauptseminar level.
