Course Description

Get creative and advance your graphic design and media knowledge this foundation course delivered in partnership with DMU. Our course is designed to equip you with the necessary skills to begin your professional portfolio. Through both traditional and modern techniques, you'll be able to showcase your varied skills set to potential employers.

Awarded by De Montfort University, the Foundation Degree in Graphic Design and eMedia is designed to equip students with the necessary skills, knowledge, and creative understanding required to succeed within the graphic design and emerging media sectors of the 21st century. As a student on a De Montfort University validated course you can experience all the benefits of student life at university. Our partnership agreement with DMU enables our students to access its facilities whilst studying on this Leicester College undergraduate course, whilst at the same time receiving a high level of one to one and small group teaching and benefitting from having a personal tutor, who can provide support and guidance through tutorials. Creative Arts students can also benefit from having access to an extensive range of facilities within the area and opportunities to collaborate with other students across a range of creative arts pathways, further developing your employability and industry related skills.

Throughout the two years of the course, both traditional graphic design techniques as well as new and emerging technologies are taught, allowing you to successfully complete briefs in order to build a portfolio that showcases your ability and potential to gain employment in a variety of diverse and creative fields. You can also progress to a full BA (Hons) in Graphic Design with a further year's study. You will graduate with a high level of creative and professional skills, thanks to a curriculum that places its emphasis on your capacity for creative and independent thought. Many previous students have successfully gained employment in both the graphic design and online media sectors.

A formal progression route exists onto its third and final top up year of the BA (Hons) degree in graphic design at De Montfort University. Alternatively Leicester College offer the BA (Hons) in Professional Studies (Creative Industries) which can be achieved with just one more year's study. Previous graduates have successfully secured employment in the creative industry sector. Employment in the form of freelance work is also possible and encouraged as part of the programme.

Grading & Study Time

All modules contain practical assessments. Formative assessment is ongoing throughout all modules. Summative assessments are predominantly coursework/portfolio based. There are no external assessments or examinations. A written dissertation is required at Level 5/Year 2.

Entry Requirements / Admissions

Minimum Required UCAS Tariff

Standard entry is 32 UCAS points consisting of at least 1 full Level 3 qualification in a related subject. You are also expected hold GCSE English grade C or equivalent. AS Levels are only counted towards your UCAS tariff in combination with a Full Level 3 qualification. We welcome applicants who do not match standard entry requirements but who can demonstrate ability to study this subject at university level and can evidence relevant experience.

A minimum IELTS score of 5.5 is required for non-English speakers

Leicester College is not a Home Office Student Sponsor and does not accept applications from international students. We can only accept applications from students already resident in the UK. EU / EEA nationals resident in the UK must be able to demonstrate that they have gained either ‘Settled’ or ‘Pre-settled’ status under the EU Settlement Scheme. Other non-UK nationals (apart from Irish nationals) must demonstrate they have valid UK residency / leave to remain in the UK to be considered for admission. Right to study in the UK does not automatically confer Home fee status and you may be required to undertake a fee status assessment to confirm your eligibility for student funding.

Additional fee information

Students benefit from accessing a computer and relevant software packages appropriate for the course outside of taught lessons. This includes Adobe Creative Suite which can be purchased with a student discount from Adobe. There may be relevant trips/visits which will contribute to student learning. This may have an additional cost of approximately £50 per year. If you have to complete a work placement involving working with children or vulnerable adults, you may need to apply for a DBS check at a cost of £40.
