Our cutting-edge material physics degree gives you the chance to explore the physics of new materials, their preparation and characterisation at a university that is internationally recognised for its contributions to the fields of physics and materials science.

Over the course of the MSc Physics of Materials programme, you will learn how to work with modern equipment and make an analysis of your own experimental and theoretical data, as well as applying modern physics methods to assess materials, examine properties of novel materials and develop the advanced theoretical and quantitative skills that are highly sought after by employers.

This master's in material physics contains a combination of supervised research work, development of research skills and taught material. It is designed to equip you with the skills needed to make an impact in the wide variety of industries whose successes are driven by the development of new materials or to continue with your academic research.

Experimental facilities at Loughborough include pulsed laser deposition, atomic force microscopy, Raman scattering and x-ray diffraction. We also have a departmental observatory featuring a 16-inch equatorially-mounted Meade telescope and other astronomical equipment.
