Course Description

We invite postgraduate research proposals in a number of disease areas that impact significantly on patient care. We focus on exploring the mechanisms of disease, understanding the ways disease impacts patients’ lives, utilising new diagnostic and therapeutic techniques and developing new treatments.

As a student in Biomedicine you will be registered with a University research institute. You will be supported in your studies through a structured programme of supervision and training via our Faculty of Medical Sciences Graduate School.

We undertake the following areas of research and offer MPhil, PhD and MD supervision in:

Applied immunobiology (including organ and haematogenous stem cell transplantation) Dermatology Diabetes Diagnostic and therapeutic technologies Kidney disease The liver Magnetic Resonance (MR), spectroscopy and imaging in clinical research Musculoskeletal disease (including auto-immune arthritis) Pharmacogenomics (including complex disease genetics) Reproductive and vascular biology Respiratory disease Pharmacology, Toxicology and Therapeutics.

Joint doctoral PhD degree programme in biomedical sciences

Newcastle University offers a joint doctoral PhD degree programme in biomedical sciences with the Faculty of Medicine, Universitas Indonesia (FKUI).

You spend at least one year of your studies in each university and are jointly supervised by staff from Newcastle University and Universitas Indonesia. This leads to a single award from both institutions. The development of the Joint Doctoral PhD programme has been generously supported under the Prime Minister's Initiative 2 Programme and the British Council Indonesia.<MS&&>

London costs approx 34% more than average, mainly due to rent being 67% higher than average of other cities. For students staying in student halls, costs of water, gas, electricity, wifi are generally included in the rental. Students in smaller cities where accommodation is in walking/biking distance transport costs tend to be significantly smaller.
