Course Description

Our International Economics and Finance MSc will suit you if you have a non-financial background. It is also for those interested in a management career with an emphasis on finance and international economics.

The behaviour of public and private sector organisations is significantly influenced by international economic developments in the financial and goods markets. As a result, there is a demand in the market for individuals with a comprehensive understanding of: •economic and financial theory •policy dimensions within an open economy context.

This course will suit motivated students who want to pursue careers in: •investment banking •financial research •financial trading.

What you'll learn: You will gain an international perspective in the role of finance and monetary policy. You will learn to understand and analyse: •international finance markets •the international trading system •the role played by key supranational institutions like the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and World Trade Organization (WTO).

You will develop a comprehensive set of technical and quantitative skills that are highly regarded in the private sector.

Advanced software: Where possible you will have access to advanced statistical software including: •Eviews •SPSS •Stata •Gauss •MATLAB •SAS •Maple •Minitab.

You will also have access to a number of financial databases including: •Bloomberg •Thompson Financial's DataStream •Fame •Amadeus •WRDS •Compustat •CRSP •Oriana.

Your development: On completion of this course, you will be able to: •deploy the main analytical techniques in the area of finance and have an advanced capability with some of these techniques •critically assess the quality of the analytical data generated by these techniques •synthesise and present relevant data, conclusions and recommendations to both specialist and non-specialist audiences •exercise responsibility and leadership in group projects •apply knowledge, skills and understanding to complex issues within finance and related industries.

Career focus: The course is excellent preparation for work in multinational enterprises in roles dealing with: •exporting or foreign investment decisions •foreign exchange risk management •portfolio fund management •financial services •banking •regulatory bodies •corporate finance and consultancy.

It also provides preliminary training if you wish to pursue further research in view of a career in research institutions or central banks.

Delivery: This course is modular, comprising 180 credits.

Guest lectures and networking opportunities: Practitioners from the world of finance and business give guest lectures every year, providing insight into career paths and job roles. You will interact with these experts to identify career opportunities and develop strategies on how to progress in your career.

Throughout the academic year we also hold many events on campus that you are welcome to join. Events are topical and provide great opportunities for you to network with: •national and multinational organisations •alumni •peers.

Practitioner and research led teaching: The course builds on our established research strengths in finance and economics: •Applied Econometrics •Behavioural Research in Finance •Macroeconomic Analysis and Applications.

For students staying in student halls, costs of water, gas, electricity, wifi are generally included in the rental. Students in smaller cities where accommodation is in walking/biking distance transport costs tend to be significantly smaller.
