Course Description

Around half a million people work in the UK fashion industry which boasts trendsetting brands from Burberry, the highest value fashion brand, to Next, the biggest high street retailer. The UK produces world-class fashion designers from Vivienne Westwood to John Galliano and your training could lead you to rub shoulders with the greats at internationally-celebrated London Fashion Week.

Our facilities include a design and pattern studio, and machine room with 3-4-5 thread overlockers capable of producing industrial lock stitch and cover stitch. The course includes textile design, pattern cutting and garment production. You will research fashion brands and the latest high street trends, and see your designs come to life on the catwalk at the annual Fashion Show.

The Higher National Diploma in Fashion & Textiles is a 14 unit qualification of which 9 are core units. Initially students will spend the first year studying Fashion and Textiles where upon at the end of the first year they will elect to specialise in one of these pathways for the second year of the programme.

Progression Opportunities After successful completion of this 2-year course, graduates can apply to do a Level 6 top up course on a BA (Hons) Degree program in areas such as Fashion Design, Costume, Fashion Marketing and Textiles.

Course work and 2 Project Set Assignments from BTEC. Fashion units are trend led and are based on ladies wear in both Woven and Jersey types. Students will be required to manipulate own designs (through sketchbooks and Illustrator into finished final garments made to industry standards). Other Units will be in essay or portfolio format.

Learners will be supplied with an equipment list for Fashion. Fabric Cost is £30 in the first year. Second year Fabric cost will be at the individual learners cost. Trips organised throughout the years to London and within the UK.

London costs approx 34% more than average, mainly due to rent being 67% higher than average of other cities. For students staying in student halls, costs of water, gas, electricity, wifi are generally included in the rental. Students in smaller cities where accommodation is in walking/biking distance transport costs tend to be significantly smaller.
