Course Description

If you’re passionate about the biological sciences, this Higher National Certificate course could be ideal. It is designed to provide you with a broad range of skills, knowledge, understanding and personal qualities required to work in a biological science-based field. This course is also suitable if you are currently employed in a relevant industrial sector and are seeking higher-level qualifications to develop further your career.

About the course

You’ll develop knowledge and understanding of biological theories and practice to be able to apply them in a variety of science-related industrial contexts.

New City Hub campus

The Life Sciences department is based at the college's new £58 million City Hub campus, near Nottingham train station. The campus features state of the art teaching and learning facilities, science laboratories, with a restaurant, cafe and performing arts venue.

Assessment

Units are assessed via a range of internally set and assessed assignments including: reports, case studies, oral presentations, practical assessments, individual project work, data analysis, research, investigation, problem-solving tasks and portfolios of evidence.

Pearson Level 4 Higher National Certificate (HNC) in Applied Sciences (Biology)

Your career and progression

From the HNC, you could progress on to our Higher National Diploma (HND) in Applied Sciences (Biology) or enter into employment.

If you continue onto the Level 5 HND, upon successful completion you could go into employment or progress onto a wide range of science-based top-up degree courses, such as a BSc (Hons) or to further professional study in applied biology or a related discipline.

Entry Requirements / Admissions

International applicants for whom English is not their first language should possess (or expect to achieve) a minimum English level of academic IELTS (International English Language Testing System) of 5.5 overall (with no component less than 5.0) or an equivalent qualification recognised by UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI) on their list of Secure English Language Tests.
