Course Description

Ostereo’s Music Business programme is designed for people keen to study the intricacies of the music industry from a modern-day perspective. The programme places a particular emphasis on the digital; how to most effectively use music streaming platforms like Spotify and social media sites such as Facebook and Instagram in line with industry expectations. The programme will also give each student a dedicated industry mentor, so that they can develop their understanding with expert guidance. In addition, the course features a guaranteed work placement so that learners can embed themselves in a real-life music industry organisation and graduate with relevant industry experience under their belt.

The course spans a 3-year programme of full-time study. Students will be provided with an overarching understanding of the music industry and its practices, both traditional and modern.

Learners will be based in the heart of Greater Manchester. With a rich cultural heritage and one of the best music scenes in the UK, there are few settings so well equipped to deliver an unforgettable university experience and allow students to develop their music industry knowledge.

Approved by the General Osteopathic Council (GOC) for the purpose of eligibility to apply for registration with that body.

For the assessment methods of the proposed programme, Ostereo wishes to combine traditional assessments with more authentic forms of practical assessment drawn from industry. ****Traditional assessments include:**** - Essays - Presentations - Viva Voces - In-class tests - Reflection journals - Dissertation Whereas the practical assessment methods will align with industry expectations and may include: - Curating Playlists - “Songwriting Session” - Working with Artists - Producing royalty accounting statements - Reviewing an Entertainment Contract - Song Submission for Synchronisation opportunity - Data Analysis The intention with the latter assessment methods is to allow students to complete, and consequently be assessed, on tasks and responsibilities which they would carry out if they are ultimately successful in securing a job in the industry.
