Course Description
This programme is a fully online masters degree in mathematics education, the first such course based in a UK University, based on the expertise and experience of staff in the Centre for Innovation in Mathematics Teaching (CIMT); this is a research and development centre dedicated to helping and supporting teachers of mathematics in the Primary, Secondary and Tertiary sectors of education.
The key features include professional development innovations, supported through working with colleagues using Japanese-style lesson study for review, evaluation and sustainability.
These innovative and motivating strategies for teaching and learning mathematics will be based on video clips from the UK and, in particular, Finland, Japan and New
Zealand and designed to help participants and their colleagues design and implement inspiring and motivating lessons.
We will help and encourage our participants to increase their knowledge and understanding through an appreciation of the main mathematical concepts that underpin mathematical progress of learners.
Participants will gain expertise as a reflective practitioner, understanding of how to see a lesson through the eyes of the learner with an ability to use appropriate
techniques and intervention strategies in teaching and learning situations.
We also expect them to gain transferable skills in engaging and motivating both learners and other teachers, using lesson study principles to facilitate, evaluate and sustain innovation and apply their teaching and learning skills in new teaching situations. This will enhance their leadership skills in mathematics education for schools and colleges as well as an ability to sustain their own and colleagues innovative and effective mathematics teaching.
Recognised by the Royal Society of Biology for the purpose of associate membership.
