Study for a higher degree by research with our respected academics within Health and Social Care.
Study for a PhD within Health and Social Care, devoted to cutting edge applied research. Based within the academic departments of Allied Health Professions, Nursing and Midwifery or Social Care and Community Studies. The community of Health and Social Care researchers are a vibrant postgraduate community where you will work closely with experienced academics to develop your knowledge and expertise.
How you learn
We support a wide range of research opportunities and help you work towards your research degree. During the course you investigate and evaluate an approved topic and display an understanding of suitable research methods, with the aim of making an original contribution to your subject area.
Your research will fit within the key thematic areas of the departments. Each provides a focus for research excellence in a strategic research area, drawing together researchers from across our three health and social care departments, the wider Sheffield Hallam University institution, and forging collaborations with partners locally, regionally, nationally and internationally. Health and Social Care staff have highly developed expertise in a broad range of research methods including action research, participatory methods, ethnography, health technology assessment, phenomenology and grounded theory. We also have expertise in evaluation, case study, surveys and mixed methods research.
Several members of our team have experience working in the health and social care sectors and with voluntary organisations in the UK and internationally.
A number of the team also have honorary academic appointments with universities in several European countries, and we have extensive collaborations with universities in Europe, North American, Africa, Australia, the East Asia and the Middle East.

Founded in 1969, Sheffield Hallam University is located in the city of Sheffield, in the Yorkshire and the Humber region of England.
