Course Description

Biomedical scientists play a leading role in developing our knowledge of human illness. As a biomedical science student here at Solent, you’ll build a detailed understanding of the causes of human disease and how these diseases produce symptoms. You’ll also explore the way that disease can affect human cells, tissues, and the body as a whole.

Our expert teaching teams will help you to develop the skills required to succeed in biomedical science. You will be supported to develop practical and analytical skills, exploring the latest technologies and experimental treatments. You’ll learn to undertake biomedical science research that can lead to the development of new diagnostic procedures or therapeutic intervention strategies. You’ll also look at the way that advances in technology can support the self-management of health.

Throughout the course you will have the opportunity to study in our bespoke laboratory facilities. These have been created specifically to support small groups of students as they build their portfolio of lab experience. Your competency will be developed through practical classes and reinforced by our virtual learning environment. Professional development and reflective practice assignments ensure that you are able to apply what you have learnt.

Employability sits at the heart of our teaching. An individual final year research project and work-related laboratory assignments mean that you’ll graduate feeling ready to take the next steps in your career. You will work with biomedical science practitioners and other professionals throughout all three years of the course.

As a graduate from an accredited biomedical science programme, you will have a strong foundation of scientific knowledge coupled with proven technical skills. This provides a starting point for a wide-range NHS, pharmaceutical or biotechnology careers.

Registering as a Biomedical Scientist with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) is required for many NHS careers. The IBMS Registration Training Portfolio must be completed in an IBMS accredited laboratory following graduation from Solent.

This course is assed via a mix of written exams (25%), practical exams (25%) and coursework projects (50%). Where possible, coursework projects relate directly to the professional working environment. Practical exams are typically conducted in the University’s specialised biochemistry and biology labs.

• Direct entry to years 2 (Level 5) or 3 (Level 6) We welcome applications from students currently studying a Foundation Degree, DipHE, HNC, HND or modules of an undergraduate degree course at another university, who wish to enter directly into Years 2 or 3 of one of our undergraduate degree courses. • Level 5 (year 2) entry To directly enter the second year of this course you will need to show appropriate knowledge and experience. For example, you are an ideal candidate if you have 120 undergraduate credits at Level 4 or a CertHE in a related subject area. • Level 6 (year 3) entry To directly enter the third year of this course you need to show appropriate knowledge and experience. For example, you are an ideal candidate if you have 240 undergraduate credits (at Levels 4 and 5), a DipHE, Foundation Degree or HND in a related subject area.

About Southampton Solent University

Solent University was established in 1855 in the City Centre of Southampton, South East England. This institution started out as a private Art school in 1856 and has since evolved into one of the most important HEIs in Southampton. Being so centrally located, students are within walking distance of most amenities in the city. Even so, the university provides more than sufficient facilities for students to find anything they need on-site. The Solent campus has a particularly active Student Union office, a great Student Hub for career or even personal advice, as well as a variety of popular restaurants.
