Course Description

Solent’s foundation year in media offers students a stimulating introduction to both the study of media and the production of media content.

You will be encouraged to develop creative and technical skills across a wide range of production mediums, such as print, online, video production, digital photography, audio production, and will also discover how media shapes our lives, giving you a solid understanding of contemporary media making and leaving you well-prepared to progress on to a full media-related degree at Solent.

The course team’s strong industry links provide you with the opportunity to listen to and learn from many leading industry guest speakers. A number of visiting fellows and professors from the worlds of film, television, media and music have previously guested, and past high-profile speakers have included film directors Sir Alan Parker and Hugh Hudson, and the R&B star, Craig David.

Solent University offers a supportive learning environment and teaching on the foundation year in media is delivered by a dedicated course team. Face to face academic support is also available, and is complemented by 24/7 access to the University’s virtual learning environment.

To support learning, students have access to Solent’s industry-standard media production facilities.

Entry Requirements / Admissions

Minimum Required UCAS Tariff

A minimum of two completed A-levels, a BTEC Extended Diploma at PPP or BTEC Diploma at MP or equivalent. We will consider mature students who have not recently undertaken a formal course of study at A-level, or equivalent, but can demonstrate relevant work or voluntary experience, that's indicative of their ability to complete the course successfully. We will also consider overseas applicants in an equivalent situation to UK students as outlined above, and who have been taught in English or have IELTS 5.5, or equivalent. We welcome applicants from a diverse range of backgrounds. Applicants who are not in possession of the minimum entry requirements but are able to demonstrate aptitude, enthusiasm and motivation will be considered on an individual basis and may be admitted subject to satisfactory interview and/or portfolio. Where an applicant is taking the EPQ in a relevant subject this might be considered alongside other Level 3 qualifications and may attract an alternative offer in addition to the standard offer. If you are taking A Levels, this would be BBB-ABB at A Level (preferably including a foreign language) and grade A in the EPQ.

Considered with a maximum of 3 other Level 3 qualifications to obtain 88 pts Preferred subjects:- Art and Design, Business and Economics, Construction and Built Environment, Design Technology, English, Geography, History, Languages, Land Based and Environment, Music, Performing Arts and Drama, Science Excluded subjects:- Hair and Beauty, Health and Social Care, Hospitality, Early Years, Customer Service, Citizenship, Accounting, PE and Sport, Public Services and Uniformed Services, Travel & Tourism Applicants doing Media subjects will be considered on an individual basis by Admissions Tutor.

Can be considered along with a minimum of 2 of the following qualifications: A-levels, BTEC Subsidiary Diplomas/ OCR Cambridge Technical Diplomas. Can also be considered in combination with a BTEC extended diploma, art and design foundation diploma or UAL extended diploma to obtain 88 pts Art and design, Business, Engineering, IT, Media, Performing Arts excluding Health and Social Care, Sport

IELTS minimum score of 5.5 overall with a minimum of 5.0 in each component of reading, writing, listening and speaking. TOEFL minimum score of 71 overall with a minimum of 19 in each component of reading, writing, listening and speaking

About Southampton Solent University

Solent University was established in 1855 in the City Centre of Southampton, South East England. This institution started out as a private Art school in 1856 and has since evolved into one of the most important HEIs in Southampton. Being so centrally located, students are within walking distance of most amenities in the city. Even so, the university provides more than sufficient facilities for students to find anything they need on-site. The Solent campus has a particularly active Student Union office, a great Student Hub for career or even personal advice, as well as a variety of popular restaurants.
