Primary Teaching is a rewarding and challenging choice of career. We offer two degree pathways for students who have successfully completed a Foundation degree in Education that would like to achieve Qualified Teacher Status (QTS).
Choosing the Work-Based Route to gain a QTS meets the needs of distinctive areas of education - teaching, learning and pedagogy.
This part-time course allows you the unique opportunity to continue to work within the education sector whilst studying with us.
All pathways within this programme prepare you to teach children aged 5-11
The programme includes students from a broad cross-section of society who work in faith and secular contexts, special needs, Primary and Early Years.
We have developed strong partnerships with a variety of schools including Catholic, other church and secular schools. Colleagues from these schools are involved in selecting students, supporting them during periods of school experience and contributing to University-based modules.
As part of the Training and Development Agency (TDA) requirements, you will be required to gain experience in two key stages in two different schools. Throughout the two years you will be assessed at school by tutors and your school mentor, supporting you to meet the TDA standards. On completion of a QTS award you will complete the Career Entry and Development Profile in preparation for transition to a newly qualified teacher (NQT)

What students say about studying Primary Education in the UK?
About St Mary's University, Twickenham
St Mary’s University is a publicly funded, formally Roman Catholic education institution situated in Twickenham, London. This university is best known for the impressive selection of sport and wellbeing degrees that they have on offer, but applicants can also expect to find degrees based on Catholic Education. The Twickenham campus is smaller than that of most other universities that can be found in and around London, and for that reason could be more suited to that learner which truly excels in an environment that isn’t excessively crowded, and where they can consult knowledgeable and experienced tutors easily without long waiting times.
