Key Course Facts

Course Description

There is a great demand for graduates who possess sophisticated communication skills and who also understand issues such as the legal status of the Welsh language, language rights, the influences on the Welsh language today and how to plan effectively for the future of the language.

In the words of the Welsh Language Commissioner: "There is currently a significant demand in the fields of care and health, public administration, police forces and third sector organisations. This course is to be welcomed as a step towards creating the workforce of the future.”

The BA Welsh: Language, Law and Policy course includes modules such as:

Multiculturalism and the Welsh language: This module looks at how ideas about language, culture and nation have developed in recent centuries. We look specifically at the growth of diversity today and the ways to deal with this. We look at how the Welsh language is included and excluded from discussions on diversity and what kind of Wales can be imagined in the future. Welsh Yesterday and Today: In the first part of the module, we will consider the main periods of the history and development of the Welsh language from the Brythonic period to the Middle Welsh period. In the second part of the module, we will study social influences on the Welsh language. Particular attention is given to handling and interpreting Census data. With the growth in Welsh education, technology and immigration, what are the challenges and opportunities for the Welsh language today? With the influence of English on the Welsh language, what kind of Welsh is 'standard' today?

Status of the Welsh language:

This is a module that offers a historical overview of the legal status of the Welsh language. To begin with, Welsh is analyzed as the language of government and law from the Middle Ages to the early modern period. Then, students will look at the campaigns of the nineteenth century to restore the language in the courts, before looking in detail at the language laws of the twentieth century in 1942, 1967 and 1993. It will be considered to what extent they succeeded in restoring the Welsh language in life official Wales in the twentieth century.
