Graduates of the Department go on to pursue bright and successful careers. Our course focuses on helping students develop the knowledge, understanding and skills needed to gain a prosperous job in the future. The statistics show that our graduates manage to get quality professional jobs, within a few months of graduating.

There is a varied choice of modules at Swansea. We have:

  • language modules (e.g. Language and Society; Translation; Working in Two Languages; Language Skills);
  • literature modules (e.g. Welsh Language Drama; Canu Protest; From Dafydd ap to Mererid Hopwood; The Land of Poets and Storytellers);
  • modules on language policy and law (e.g. Status of the Welsh Language; Welsh Language, Decentralization and the Law; Multiculturalism and the Welsh Language).

Here are the views of some of our former students:

"I really enjoyed my time in the Welsh Language Department very much and I managed to do many different modules. I was able to learn a host of skills that will always be helpful in my career. The Welsh language opens so many different doors. The best decision I made was to go to Swansea to study Welsh. The staff are always so supportive. Thank you Swansea University!” Rhiannon Lloyd, Gwent Police

"'There is nowhere better to continue your studies than the Department of Welsh, Swansea University. The Department is close-knit and the lecturers in particular. There is a strong sense of community in the Department. Personally, I enjoy writing creatively and it's great to have experts in Swansea who can help me develop my craft." Matthew Tucker, now an MA student

The staff of the Welsh Language Department receive international acclaim for their research work. In the last REF assessment, 100% of the Department's research work was judged to be of international standard or above. There are two poets and Book of the Year winners among members of the Department's staff.

In addition, our campus is just a stone's throw from the beach and yet all located in a vibrant city. In Swansea, you get the best of both worlds!
