Course Description

Study the relationship between English Language and English Literature. You will explore and analyse a range of literary texts from various contexts and historical periods, from Beowulf to the present day, alongside exploring the complex relationships between literature, politics and history whilst considering how words combine to inspire us and move us, to persuade, encourage and amuse us. Study modules may include Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL), creative writing, gender and culture, gothic and 19th century literature, and contemporary fiction. Swansea itself has a rich literary heritage; it is the birthplace of Dylan Thomas, widely regarded by many literary scholars as one of the twentieth century's most influential lyrical poets. You will have the opportunity to get involved in projects with the Dylan Thomas Centre and also the National Theatre in Wales. Throughout the course, all students have access to events, workshops and employer talks, including an annual conference which support final year students with the transition into the world of work. In the second year, you will have the opportunity to take the highly respected CELTA qualification for teachers of English as a foreign language and your third year will be spent gaining valuable cultural experiences with a Year Abroad in places which could include Hong Kong, China or Singapore, North America or Canada. Set in parkland overlooking Swansea Bay on the edge of the breathtaking Gower Peninsula, you will benefit from close access to beautiful beaches and countryside, while being in close proximity to a thriving city centre. About Swansea University

Swansea University was established in 1920 and is located in the large city of Swansea, in Wales. There are two campuses, the flagship campus is located between Singleton Park, with its green parkland and botanical gardens, and Swansea Bay beach. The more recent Bay Campus on the other hand is located on an extensive beachfront property on the eastern side of town, past the marina. Apart from a vibrant academic life, students can attend the numerous yearly festivals that take place in Swansea, guaranteeing plenty of opportunities for getting out and about in your free time.
