Course Description

The Performing Arts (Musical Theatre) HNC is a vocational course which explores both the traditional/conventional forms of Musical Theatre and the differences in approaches to contemporary Musical Theatre. The course questions, discusses and criticises developments in the form and whether the traditional techniques are still relevant and needed in today’s theatre industry.

Within Musical Theatre, you will experience new methods of learning about microphone technique, self-tapes and ensemble singing as well as branding and self-promotion to ensure we are employable and seen by relevant industry professionals.

Performances may take place in a variety of spaces, including studios, a college theatre and HD multi-camera TV studio, fully equipped for professional performance, local theatres and arts facilities, and site-specific locations.

Jobs & Career Perspectives

15 months after graduation, graduates of this course were asked about what they do and, if they are working, about their current job and their perspectives.

The programme is assessed mainly through practical performance and assessment; continuous assessment across rehearsal and development and evaluative interviews to assess personal development and contribution. The submission of written essays, evaluations, logbooks and presentations is also a part of the HNC; learning research, academic skill and writing skill to ensure that students are equipped for higher level learning. Students will gain formative feedback verbally for both written work and practical assessment. Peer and self-assessment is an essential element of personal development which enhances the learning experience and allows space for personal evaluation.
