Course Description

Our PhD/MPhil Biostatistics programme enables you to undertake a research project that will improve understanding of Biostatistics.

Underpinning all our work in collaborative clinical and healthcare research is a vibrant programme of methodological research. Our main research themes within biostatistics investigate design and analysis of both randomised trials and epidemiological studies, including the management and analysis of large e-health datasets and complex statistical modelling of high-dimensional biomarker data and clustered or correlated outcomes.

In particular, our research covers:

  • Modern statistical approaches to causal inference

  • The design and analysis of randomised trials and other clinical experiments (including the evaluation of complex interventions)

  • The management and analysis of large ehealth data sets;

  • Complex statistical modelling, including the use of Bayesian methods, including applications to high-dimensional biomarker data and clustered or correlated outcomes arising from measurements repeated over time (including repeated events or interventions);

  • Interventions being provided to groups of participants rather than individuals;

  • Measurement error evaluation and modelling;

  • Genetic epidemiology;

  • Survival, event-history and frailty models.

  • Prediction/prognostic modelling.

Accredited by the General Pharmaceutical Council (GPhC) in order to progress to pharmacist pre-registration training and then to register as a pharmacist. Please note, the 5-year integrated MPharm degree programme includes pre-registration training.
