Course Description
If you’re passionate about history but also dream of spending time in France and becoming fluent in the language – how do you choose which degree to study: We say, choose both!
This joint honours course allows you to combine your curiosity for human experience with your love of communicating in another language.
This course, combining history with degree-level study in French language and culture, is open to beginners in French as well as post-A level students. You will study general approaches and concepts in history alongside specialised history modules in the French context.
Absolute beginners, GCSE, AS (beginners' entry), or A level students (post-A level entry) in French are warmly invited to apply.
Beginners' French
As a beginner you will follow an intensive language course designed to take you to degree level within four years.
Post-A level French
As a post-A level student you will take language classes at an advanced level.
On both routes - post-A level or beginners' - you will divide your time equally between French and history.
For the history part of the degree, in the first year, you will take a core foundational module introducing key concepts and approaches and optional modules in areas that interest you.
You also have the opportunity to spend a year abroad, allowing you to fully immerse yourself in the French language and culture as well as making you more independent and confident.

BTEC Level 3 National Extended Certificate: D plus AB in two A Levels to include English. Preferred:- Performing Arts, Art & Design, Digital Film and Video Production,Business IT, Applied Science,Sport, Sport and Exercise Science
The Welsh Baccalaureate Skills Challenge Certificate will be accepted in lieu of one A Level at the A Level grades specified, excluding any subject specific requirements.
If Mathematics is not taken beyond GCSE, a grade 7, (or A) in GCSE Mathematics, or Core Mathematics grade B is essential
European Baccalaureate - 75% overall including 8.0 in History. If taking post A Level then 8.0 in French. No language qualification is required for beginners pathway.
