On this unique, specialist course you’ll learn from experienced senior oral and maxillofacial pathologists and scientists with international reputations.

Course description

This is the only course in the UK in this specialist field. It focuses on the pathology of diseases and disorders that affect the tissues and organs of the oral cavity and its related structures.

The course aims to give you a critical, systematic understanding of oral pathological conditions that require diagnosis by histopathological methods. You’ll study the laboratory methods used to prepare oral diagnostic material for histopathological examination and the research tools used to advance the practice of diagnostic oral pathology.

We teach you competence in the microscopical diagnosis of common and significant oral pathological lesions. You’ll learn when further information or additional procedures are needed to confirm a diagnosis. The course is taught by experienced senior oral and maxillofacial pathologists and scientists with international reputations.

The course builds upon the basic understanding of pathology and oral pathology that you’ll have gained at undergraduate level and is particularly suited to those who have obtained relevant postgraduate experience in a related clinical discipline.

It provides a sound basis for further studies in oral pathology. It will also feed into your training in related clinical disciplines.

Once you've graduated, you’ll have a high level of competence in diagnosing common and significant oral pathological lesions and conditions. You'll be able to determine the steps necessary to resolve a diagnosis for specimens beyond your immediate capabilities.

You’ll also have knowledge and understanding of the common laboratory methods used to prepare oral diagnostic material for histopathological examination and the main research tools and methods used to advance the practice of diagnostic oral pathology.

Additional costs: the cost of dissertation binding is not included in your course fees.

English language requirements: Overall IELTS score of 6.5 with a minimum of 6.0 in each component, or equivalent.

You need a recognised dental or medical qualification. You must have at least one year’s postgraduate experience in a relevant clinical discipline. English language requirements: Overall IELTS score of 6.5 with a minimum of 6.0 in each component, or equivalent.

London costs approx 34% more than average, mainly due to rent being 67% higher than average of other cities. For students staying in student halls, costs of water, gas, electricity, wifi are generally included in the rental. Students in smaller cities where accommodation is in walking/biking distance transport costs tend to be significantly smaller.
