Midwives are autonomous practitioners who work in a range of roles and settings. The role requires strong leadership.

As a midwife, you’ll be recognised as an expert in supporting, advising and advocating for women and their families during pregnancy, childbirth and post-partum care. You’ll become a highly educated and skilled midwife, who is able to deliver and progress evidenced-based research and holistic midwifery care to women and their families.

Leadership is at the centre of our curriculum, so we can give you the tools you need to qualify as a registered midwife with the potential for career development in several areas including management, leadership, consultancy, educational and research roles. The course leads to registration at masters level.

In preparation for practice as an autonomous midwife in the maternity services, our course emphasises active learning, with a particular focus on: developing critical thinking and expert knowledge personal and professional reflection research awareness leadership education that is aligned to meet the UNICEF-UK Baby Friendly Initiative Standards

This course is accredited by the Nursing and Midwifery Council – the professional regulatory body for nurses and midwives.

Your programme is 50 per cent theory and 50 per cent practice.

Modules show you how to apply theory to practice so you can learn how to be a safe and effective midwife. Once registered, you’ll be ready to assume the responsibilities and accountability of a registered midwife.

We use a range of learning and teaching strategies so that you progressively acquire subject-specific knowledge, understanding and skills, as well as wider generic and postgraduate skills. You’ll develop your skills through a variety of learning and teaching activities, including high-fidelity patient simulation training.

Teaching methods include lectures, skills workshops, seminars, group and individual tutorials, and independent learning and reflection.

We also use supervised clinical practice. This develops your practice through supervision and assessment of the required clinical skills, which you’ll record as part of your portfolio.

We often invite guest speakers, including service users and carers. In addition to these visits, we use videos, patient stories and narratives and reports as teaching material.
