French and German at Aberdeen brings together two top-rated subjects and a great pairing of major European languages to give you a strong competitive advantage in the European and international world. With the specialist language, cultural, and academic skills you will gain, you will be extremely attractive to employers in many areas of business, arts, education, tourism and media.
French at Aberdeen has an outstanding reputation, gaining the highest possible rating of ‘Excellent’ in the last national Teaching Quality Assessment. You will add to your growing language skills with courses in contemporary civilisation and culture, Francophone and post-colonial studies, philosophy, history, sociology, linguistics, theatre and most genres and periods of literature from the middle ages to the present day. You will be taught by staff recognised internationally for their research, from Renaissance studies to the politics of culture and difference in contemporary France. At Honours level, you will have the opportunity to study topics in which our staff are leading experts. German at Aberdeen also scored ‘Excellent’ in the latest Teaching Quality Assessment. You will gain a solid grounding in the German language whatever your level, together with courses in social, historical and cultural aspects of German-speaking countries, encounter the world of German artistic expression in the form of literature, film and art and gain a deeper understanding of Germany’s complex history. As an integral part of your 5-year programme, you will spend your third year developing your languages and cultural familiarity, with half the year spent as a language assistant or visiting student in a French-speaking country and half in Germany or Austria. This subject combination is a great preparation for a career in European organisations including the EC, international business, tourism, language teaching, or with transferable skills appealing to employers in many other fields.

About University of Aberdeen
Dating back to the year 1495 we find the University of Aberdeen, located in the Scottish city of the same name. The main site of this ancient institution is Old Aberdeen, where students in the arts and social sciences as well as the physical sciences carry out their learning.
