Course Description

This course covers the history of Scotland, Europe, India, Africa, and North America, from medieval times to the present day. It draws on the activity of our research clusters in global history [link to centre], Scottish history [link to centre], and public history.

You'll be able to study political, cultural, military, economic, and social history. You can explore different historical issues including social justice, and topics such as crime and policing, or the historical study of crime fiction and forensics, which cross over with other academic departments.

You will also gain specialist skills to enhance your employability. For example, we offer documentary making. As part of our public history theme, you'll have the opportunity to write a script for a historical documentary, or to film a short documentary.

Other skills training includes public outreach, research ethics, research using databases, and the work of archivists. We have a substantial body of archival material and a team of archivists to work with.

If you are hoping to continue to a PhD, we offer extensive support in writing a PhD application. Our core module, Skills and Sources, includes sessions on how to write grant proposals. When you come to write your own PhD proposal, we will support you every step of the way.

You'll complete a dissertation, and this will deepen your historiographical knowledge and and develop your advanced historical research and conceptual skills. This is particularly important should you proceed to doctoral study.

We offer a regular postgraduate forum, visiting speakers and an annual postgraduate conference. We encourage every MLitt student to present their work. You'll also get plenty of practice in public speaking throughout the year, with presentations forming an important part of modules.

The qualifying law degree is recognised by the Solicitors Regulation Authority (SRA) for the purposes of satisfying the academic stage of training.
