Course Description

  • This MA explores the fundamental role of language and literacy in education: for learning in every subject, for democratic empowerment, and for understanding self and world.
  • In the core module, Reading the World, you will explore how readers make sense of written text, and how learners can be supported to read with high-levels of comprehension.
  • In the core module, Writing the Future, you will explore the cognitive processes involved in writing, as well as the social influences which shape what and how we write.
  • A distinctive feature of the programme is that each of the core modules also focuses on your own personal development, looking at children’s literature and reading for pleasure, and engaging you in undertaking your own creative writing.
  • The course involves critical enquiry which will improve the outcomes of learners in reading and writing in your school, or other settings.
  • Using a flexible, blended approach to learning (combining online and face-to-face teaching), the MA is designed specifically for busy professionals who wish to develop their knowledge and expertise.

Get advice on which foundation courses are best for you to still study Language and Literacy in Education, MA, if you do not meet the minimum requirements in terms of UCAS score, A levels, or English language requirements.

For admission to the programme we would normally expect that you hold a 2:1 Honours degree (or equivalent) in a relevant subject area such as social sciences, humanities or education. While we normally only accept applicants who meet this criteria, if you have a high 2:2 or equivalent, are coming from a different academic background which is equivalent to degree level, or have relevant work experience, we would welcome your application.

We welcome applications from students who hold qualifications and degrees that are not in education. These may include degrees and qualifications undertaken in the social sciences, natural sciences, humanities, arts or business studies. Please note that this list is not exhaustive and every application will be considered on a case-by-case basis. We would encourage applicants to use their personal statement to indicate their interests in education and any relevant work experience.

London costs approx 34% more than average, mainly due to rent being 67% higher than average of other cities. For students staying in student halls, costs of water, gas, electricity, wifi are generally included in the rental. Students in smaller cities where accommodation is in walking/biking distance transport costs tend to be significantly smaller.

About University of Exeter

The University of Exeter is a government funded research university based in Exeter, Devon, in the South-West region of England. The university has two campuses in Exeter, which are known as Streatham and St Luke’s, while another two are situated in the coastal town of Cornwall, known as Truro and Penryn.
