Course Description

Develop your understanding of the key concepts in applied linguistics and build academic and professional skills perfect for a range of language-related careers, including TESOL.

Our MA in Applied Linguistics is designed to engage students in a wide range of topics and perspectives relevant to the field of linguistics. We explore areas relevant to professional translation, the IT industry, education and language policy, language teaching, and publishing, all of which build your professional skills alongside theoretical understanding.

This course gives you the chance to gain advanced knowledge of different approaches to contemporary linguistic issues and a greater understanding of the mechanisms underlying all human language. With the dissertation, you will carry out a sustained piece of independent research on a relevant topic of your choice. By choosing a TESOL-related research topic, you would be eligible to be awarded the MA Applied Linguistics (TESOL).

What you should know about this course

  • You’ll develop the skills and knowledge needed to conduct your own research project for your dissertation in Applied Linguistics, including TESOL.
  • Gain a theoretical perspective on translation practices.
  • Obtain an understanding of cross-linguistic variation.
  • Explore current issues in second language acquisition.
  • Develop knowledge of current issues in TESOL, language testing and materials development.

On this course, students are assessed by a variety of assessment methods, including essays, presentations, examinations, problem sets, research posters and a dissertation.

If you were educated in a language other than English and/or in a country where English speakers are in a minority, you should have a minimum IELTS score of 7 or equivalent. If you require a Tier 4 (General) student visa to study in the UK, your score must be from a UK Visas and Immigration approved IELTS test. Applicants whose IELTS scores fall below the required levels may be eligible for a conditional offer dependent on successfully completing a Pre-sessional English course (also available at the University of Greenwich).

London costs approx 34% more than average, mainly due to rent being 67% higher than average of other cities. For students staying in student halls, costs of water, gas, electricity, wifi are generally included in the rental. Students in smaller cities where accommodation is in walking/biking distance transport costs tend to be significantly smaller.
