Course Description

Biological Sciences is the study of all living things, which includes multicellular organisms like humans, animals, and plants as well as microorganisms. As a biological sciences student you'll have the opportunity to study several core biological sciences modules, which include dynamic living systems, physiology and genomes and evolution.

This course has advanced accreditation by the Royal Society of Biology and accreditation is reviewed on a regular basis. As a student on this course, you’ll be able to apply for undergraduate membership of the Biochemical Society and The Physiological Society (UK). You’ll also be eligible for student affiliate membership of the Royal Society of Biology and upon successful graduation be eligible to apply for one year associate membership, this can help open up networks at a crucial time when applying for jobs.

This course is accredited at advanced level by the Royal Society of Biology for the purpose of meeting in part the academic and experience requirement for the Membership and Chartered Biologist (CBiol). Graduates can apply for membership of the Royal Society of Biology at Member (MRSB) level after two years of practice, rather than the usual three years, due to the significant research experience acquired.

You’ll have the opportunity to study core topics and consider contemporary issues in all major aspects of biology. Optional choices in each year of your course provide you with opportunities to specialise further in core areas of molecular cell biology, organismal biology, and ecology and environmental biology. Alternatively, you can vary your choice of optional modules to keep your coverage of the biological sciences broad. In the final year, you can undertake an extended research project in the laboratory with expert supervision. You’ll be taught through a series of lectures, tutorials, and laboratory work. Assessment will include project work, assignments, and examinations. The final year research project contributes to your degree classification.
