Course Description

The Housing and Community Planning MA provides students with a critical understanding of the contemporary challenges associated with housing and community planning, including their interaction with social, economic, environmental and political issues. Students will develop a range of practical and analytical skills and experience that will enable them to pursue careers related to housing, planning, and the built environment.This programme is focused on developing high level student understanding and experience of housing and community planning practice, and its interaction with various societal challenges. The programme consists of core modules related to planning for housing and home and community planning techniques, in addition to learning that places this in the context of theoretical and practical spatial planning challenges.

The programme has a strong practical emphasis, including a field class and a major 30 credit professional practice module where learning and skills are applied to real-world work-based scenarios. This reflects the programme's commitment to the development of skills and experience that can strengthen graduate employability.

A variety of assessment approaches are used including oral and poster presentations, reports, essays and digital diaries. Teaching is provided in a range of environments and formats, including field classes, seminars, lectures, small group work, and work-based scenarios. Assessments are intended to support development of skills that will be transferable to future careers and practice, including digital fluency and report writing.

The programme is delivered by a team of internationally renowned experts in housing and community planning. Lecturers are actively involved in learned societies such as the Housing Studies Association, hold editorial roles within prestigious journals such as Town Planning Review and the International Journal of Housing Policy, and are based within the Department of Geography & Planning, home to the world's first planning school.
